ABA Online Writing CLE
In the spring of 2000, the American Bar Association approached Gary about turning his ideas on writing and
teaching writing into a series of online writing courses for lawyers. The collaboration resulted in a series of
one hour CLEs unlike anything lawyers have ever seen. The courses are neither text-based nor talking head; they
are not a video of someone teaching a seminar.
They are a completely re-thought, fast-paced, intuitive experience,
designed for a new medium and filled with animated lessons and hands-on exercises culled from opinions, briefs,
memoranda, letters, and contracts. Gary explains the ideas simply, illustrates them graphically, then the lawyers
take over, working the exercises. When the lawyers finish an exercise, they receive immediate, individual
responses. When they finish the course, they receive one hour of CLE credit in most states.
Part I: Clear & Concise provides lawyers with an editing system for quickly spotting useless words.
Part II: Bright & Lively expands the editing system to reveal the parts of a sentence that are dull and lifeless. The technology for this course is even more responsive and specific than Part I.
Part III: Fast & Forward shows lawyers how to arrange their sentences so their readers can move quickly through what they have written.
